Scunthorpe 1-1 Southend United

Southend United gained a valuable point at table-topping Scunthorpe on a chilly October night at Glanford Park. But the Blues will feel hard done by after conceding a dubious penalty with just eleven minutes to go.

The first half was a gritty affair with both sides playing some good football. Former Southend striker Gary Hooper was guilty of missing his side's best chance just before the break when he headed an effort wide when it was easier to score. Hal Robson-Kanu had a good effort saved before that, but the returning Lee Barnard hardly had a chance in the opening 45.

But Adam Barrett put the visitors ahead on 47 when an inswinging corner was met by the defender for his first goal of the season. It galvanised the home side.

Scunthorpe were creating chances every time they went forward and the Blues were saved on numerous occasions by some poor finishing or outstanding saves from Adam Federici.

However on 79, the home side levelled after an off-the-ball incident was seen by the linesman, who signalled to the referee for a penalty. Even Scunthorpe players were surprised by the controversial decision. Paul Hayes stepped up and smashed it past Federici.

Man of the match Federici had time to make two more fine saves before the end of the game and both sides will be relieved - for different reasons - to pick up a share of the spoils.

The Blues remain sixth - five points behind tonight's opposition.

After the game, Steve Tilson said:

"It was a good game. I'm hoping these two sides will be up there at the end.

"Apparently the ref's put his flag up for Adam Barrett holding one of their players. We're not getting the decisions. It's cost us two points tonight. We can't appeal - what can we do?

"It's just happening too many times, I have to swallow this once again and I go home thinking what could have been. I'm very disappointed.

"A draw would have been a fair result based on the balance of play, but when you don't go and get three points because of a refereeing decision then it's hard to take.

"Adam's made some decent saves tonight. Decisions we've had this year haven't been in our favour. I'm sure we'll talk about this on the bus, but it's so disappointing.

"We're now seven unbeaten and it's a big plus we've kept that run going tonight. I thought the lads showed a lot of desire and commitment tonight, so it's well done to them."
